About BelizeA former British colony, named British Honduras, Belize gained independence in 1981. On the Yucatan Peninsula, with Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west, Honduras to the south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Still part of the British Commonwealth, Belize has a democratically elected Government. Belize is homes for a Population of approx. 280,000 people in a country the size of Massachusetts, with approx. 350,000 tourists a year (compared to Costa Rica which has 1.4 million). English is the official language, although Spanish is widely spoken. The currency is pegged to the U.S. $ at B$2 to US$1. Time zone is Central Standard Time – no Daylight Savings. For an English speaking country so close to the USA it is amazing that it hasn't been "runover" with boaters and tourists demanding a Burger King on every corner!! Thankfully, it is much like the Caribbean of yore, before traffic jams in St. Martin (they use golf carts on Ambergris!!). If you are looking for some of the best cruising grounds south of the Bahamas and West of the Grenadines (and a helluva lot closer!), then Belize is a must explore destination.
